Cosplay is a huge part of our Jacksonville NERD scene and on top of our listings we also feature one interview in each of our annual print issues with a local cosplayer. Our first Cosplay Feature was Countess Alyx who we asked to chose who would be the next feature and she has passed the torch to Miss Kourmori!

Miss Kourmori

  1. What first got you into cosplay, and what was your first cosplay character?
I got into cosplay because of my childhood love of video games. My first cosplay was Amy Rose from Sonic the Hedgehog around the age of 11 – though back then I didn’t know that “cosplay” had a name! I just wore her for Halloween that year and have been hooked ever since.
  2. What has been your favorite character to cosplay and why?
I very much enjoy cosplaying as Morrigan Aensland from Darkstalkers. Bat wings are by far my favorite prop to make – I’ve even created a Youtube tutorial for them. Additionally, donning Morrigan gives me great confidence. I feel beautiful and powerful as a woman when I wear that piece.
  3. What’s been your biggest challenge so far in the cosplay world?
Learning not to rush my work has been my biggest challenge. I used to pull all-nighters before conventions, which produced work that was far from my best. In hindsight, “con crunch” made me temporarily dislike the hobby for a few years! It wasn’t fun when I felt like I “had” to finish something right that second. Now that I only craft when I feel inspired, cosplay has become enjoyable for me again!
  4. Who are your cosplay heroes and why?
I adore Fred & Elle Designs, Cowbuttcrunchies, Kamui Cosplay, and Kinpatsu Cosplay. Each of them makes amazing pieces that inspire me to push myself further and learn more skills!
  5. With unlimited resources, what would be your dream cosplay to create and why?
Dizzy from Guilty Gear Xrd or KOS-MOS from Xenosaga Episode III. Each has rather complex outfits with complex cuts to sew. KOS-MOS has wonderful props, while Dizzy has spectacular wings! I have wanted to cosplay them for over a decade, but wanted to wait until I could do them justice.
  6. Any advice for those new and curious to the cosplay scene looking to get into costuming?
Experiment with inexpensive materials and items that you have at home! Resourcefulness is an invaluable asset in cosplay creation and will push you to learn things you never thought possible.
  7. Where is the best place for our readers to follow you?
